A meeting of Bulgarian, Romanian and Austrian interior ministers in Budapest on Nov. 22 could untie the Schengen knot Vienna, which is currently the only country opposing the abolition of border controls at the two Schengen countries' land borders, has set increased funding for external border protection and more border controls between Bulgaria and Romania as conditions for the full override of the veto.
When asked by journalists whether the Austrian veto could be expected to be canceled, the Austrian Interior Ministry responded with statistics showing a significant drop in the number of illegal border crossings between Bulgaria and Romania - down 46% and 10% compared to last year.
