The EU Council allowed Bulgaria and Romania to join Schengen by air and sea from March 31, 2024.
Joining the Schengen area, whether by air or airless space, is a mandatory merger of national bases with the Schengen information system , i.e. all visas and RP issued by Bulgaria will become Schengen.
Citizens of visa-free countries who do not have a permit in the EU will not be able to travel between Bulgaria and the Schengen countries, having stayed there and there for 90 days, as the base will be the same.
The date of removal of land border controls is expected to be from January 1, 2025.
